CRUSH

Crush is a monthly party built by Jen Lyon showcasing "Dance Bands We Love", a few bands that we are seriously crushing on -- Their music makes us feel like we're bathing in champagne and skipping through meadows. They don't make us dance like say, the cabbage patch or running man, but they move us all the same.

HUSSLE CLUB
http://www.myspace.com/hussleclub
“Mixing an interestingly sinister collage of iterations ranging from proto-punk to punk to post-punk to noise to a truly dark vision of the New Romantic 1980s and grabbing elements of the genre go-betweens from the 1960s onward, Hussle Club, the solo/side project from HEARTSREVOLUTION member and touring/session drummer for Santigold and Spank Rock, Prince Terrence, is poised to be a huge deal in the coming eon. Terrence has been talking this up for a while now with a lot of “hush hush”, but we’ve now got three tracks on the Hussle Club MySpace page, a remix of the song “I Have High Expectations For What I Want To Be But In The Mirror I Don’t See Them Staring Back At Me” from the young marauder Felix Cartal and an impending release of all of it in the very near future, and there’s not a chance that any whispers will be kept at such a low decibel level.

We are—and we’re not alone in this—extremely antsy to see what’s going to come to Hussle Club in the future tense, and we’re assured through the stellar music Terrence has arranged that the future is, er, bright. You can hear the demos on the Hussle Club page and the Felix Cartal remix is up on his site right now.” - THE CULTURE OF ME

MY GOLD MASK
http://www.myspace.com/mygoldmask
“…a delicate balance between 90’s alternative rock gestures and futuristic gypsy tribe shit. But the real magic happens with the versatility of Gretta Rochelle’s vocals — mostly soaring but she’s not afraid to trash it up and sound total gutter.” -BIG STEREO 3/29/09

“Art-nouveau pop-rock flows out of this talented duo with an eerie sense of ease.” -SHEENA BEASTON 3/31/09

RAFTER

“Rafter is the real first name of San Diego’s Rafter Roberts and besides having a cooler first name than any of us, he also makes sweet jams. Rafter is on Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label but his sound is much more groove-pop than indie-folk as he uses a slew of weird sounds to patch together oddly pleasing music. I had “Love Time Now Please” (below) on regular rotation a few years ago so it’s exciting to hear recent single “Paper” upping the ante. Rafter’s potty mouth contrasts with the song’s summery pop vibe but the end result is just as upbeat and infectious as ever. Just try not singing along to that “You motherfuckers!” in the chorus. Try! Rafter’s 4th LP, Animal Feelings, is out April 13th but there are plenty of free Rafter goodies being served up over at the Asthmatic Kitty website. (“Juicy” off of Sweaty Magic is everything it sounds like.)” - http://www.theburningear.com

C-MON & KYPSKI
http://www.c-monandkypski.com
Eclectic visionaries C-Mon & Kypski proved themselves as genre-bending geniuses on their last album, Where the Wild Things Are, which Esquire Magazine fondly referred to as, “The hot shit in Europe right now.” 3 years later, and with extensive European and US touring under their belts, C-Mon & Kypski are back in the studio working their magic to shatter expectations and take their music to the next level with their upcoming release titled: “We Are Square”, scheduled for October 2009.

Over the course of C-Mon & Kypski’s previous three albums and the last two years spent on the road in Europe, North America and South Africa, the band has evolved from a hip-hop and electronica led turntablist duo to a bombastic, four-piece powerhouse of musical talent. The group is comprised of enigmatic producer and founding member C-Mon, fellow founding member and 6-time DMC Dutch DJ champion Kypski, Dutch Keyboardist of the Year* Jori, and guitar slinging, multi-instrumentalist, Daniel.

We are Crush’in hardcore on Chicago’s My Gold Mask right now! And we’re not the only ones!! American fashion designer Phillip Lim used My Gold Mask songs “Violet Eyes” and “Your Coo Ka Choo” in his Fall/Winter 2010/2011 fashion show during last month’s New York Fashion Week! It’s pretty surreal to see runway models walking the catwalk during Gretta Rochelle’s line about driving nails in to your heart but freaking sweet nonetheless.

Catch them LIVE at Crush on April 22nd with Hussle Club, Rafter & C-mon Kypski! Tickets avail now! http://www.revtone.com/tickets

MNDR in PAPER

At Crush, our main goal is to find breaking artists that we love and share them with the world, one show, one blog post, and one twitter feed at a time. A couple months back, we brought you “electro-pop purveyor” MNDR who blew our minds on stage at Glasslands. This week we picked up the latest issue of PAPER Mag to find a full page article on the dear MNDR! We are so stoked that people are paying attention to good tunes and that we were able to have MNDR at Crush Party before she takes over the world and becomes the next Lady Gaga. ;)

Awesome Pop

Who’s crushin’? We are..for the three bands that hit the stage tonight. Here’s the skinny:

1. Sepalcure started the night:

This duo is Back-to-the-Future. They go “back in the day” with serious vocal-soul-house sounds, merged with tech-dance and then take you all the way forward with their “I’m-dancing-by-myself-and-my-computer” routine that is the deregeur dance move of our times. If you missed it tonight, check it for yourself at their release party in May at Dub War. Seriously, buy a ticket today.

2. Pharoah played 2nd:

Overheard watching Pharoah:

Guy: “What genre is this?”

Girl: “Pop”

Guy: “You mean Awesome Pop”

Our sentiments exactly!

For reference, other bands that are Awesome Pop: Passion Pit, Telephoned, Yes Giantess.

3. Streetlab killed it to close the night:

Best comment about their set: “You looked around and didn’t even realize that girls were in the room, then Streetlab started and there they were.”

Nuff said.

Pharoah
http://www.unitoneonline.com/temp/pharaoh_stream/main.html
After years of playing different instruments, Ernesto Pantin aka Pharaoh started producing and DJing at the age of 17 in his home country of Venezuela. He found his true medium in the mixer, and jumped on the express highway of Electronic Dance Music. Not only has he produced and DJed for many Hip Hop acts, such as 3 Dueños, Dj Trece, Budu, etc, but he also was the founding member of Todosantos (Flamin Hotz Records). Since relocating to Brooklyn, Pharaoh has become famous for his Salvation Army parties and collaborations with such artists as Cardopusher, Krames, Ninja Sonik, and Dev79

Sepalcure
http://www.sepalcure.com
Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Machinedrum and Praveen. Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. Future lovestep.
